Metropolis

If you don’t have any plans for tomorrow night tune in to Arte at 8.30 pm for the first release of the restored silent film “Metropolis“. 83 years after the premiere only a shortened version was circulating but then in 2008 long-lost film reels with about 30 minutes of missing sequences were rediscovered in Buenos Aires. This uncut “Metropolis” had been sent to Argentina in 1928 and had ended up in a private collector’s archive. With the help of old notes, this classic got recut and restored in terms of the original version of Fritz Lang and Thea von Harbou. One of the most important works in cinematic history is to be shown in a complete uncut version at the opening of the Berlinale at Friedrichstadt Palast and Arte will broadcast live.

Addicted

to True Blood

During the holidays I finally started watching True Blood. You can officially call me an addict now. Created by Six Feet Under producer Alan Bell and based on the Southern Vampire series of novels by Charlaine Harris, True Blood is an unlikely but irresistible mixture of pungent political satire, observant pop sociology and lurid drive-in thrills. The series isn’t meant to be an exercise in good taste. Just a romp and a wallow – and a bloody good one.
The Emmy-nominated title sequence was created by Digital Kitchen. Two years old but still beating out all other title sequences. It’s overflowing with sin-and-redemption symbolism, the footage is raw and graphic, and the song is almost too good. In short, it’s perfect. For this opening title sequence, DK takes us on a turbulent ride through the darkest reaches of the south. “This vivid title sequence so effectively evokes the spirit of the show. It immediately transports the viewer into the True Blood world where the conjured thematic images of sex, death and religious fervor blend into a gripping crescendo” said Alan Bell once. Brittany Murphy died yesterday after collapsing in her Los Angeles home. She first won her way into our hearts as the tough-talking tomboy turned beauty queen in Clueless. Since then the quirky cute actress has starred in movies like Girl, Interrupted, 8 Mile, Just Married, Uptown Girls and Sin City . If you’ve never seen Spun directed by Jonas Åkerlund, check it out. In this movie she played a whacked-out tweeker, maybe her best role.

It will take you on a ride and blow you away. If you want to avoid some of the problems with it, just make sure to turn your brain off upon arrival and let your senses lead you ;)
